How Much Will My Divorce Cost? - Howard J. Pfeffer Law Firm Fees

It is impossible to advise you in advance what your total legal fee will be. Several factors directly affect the amount of legal fees incurred in any family matter. Here are some of the major factors:

  • The time and labor required to resolve the situation. We work strictly on an hourly basis. Obviously, the more parties negotiate or argue, the longer it will take to settle your case. Each month we send out an extremely detailed statement We bill in six-minute increments, so you can see and analyze the exact amount of time we spend on each task in your case.
  • The novelty and complexity of the matter. Naturally, a case involving children, significant real estate, alimony and large assets, will take more time and be more expensive than a situation in which a party has no assets or real estate, no children and has been married a relatively short time.
  • The skill requisite to perform legal services required. Again, in situations in which there are large and complex assets, a self owned business, etc., more time and expertise is required to settle the matter or try the case.

The Following is an explanation of our fees:

Retainer Fee - Our retainer varies depending on the situation. Retainers range from $1,000 to $7,500, based upon the various issues, complexity of the case, and which attorney handles your case. The retainer is placed in our attorney professional account, from which we make payment for services rendered each month. We send you a very detailed and itemized billing for all work performed on your behalf, each month.

Payments on Account: If the entire retainer is expended during the course of litigation, we allow you to make monthly payments on account, rather than requiring an additional lump sum retainer. We charge 12% per year (1% per month) as interest, on any outstanding balance due over thirty days old. If any retainer monies are left over at the end of your case, we return the remaining balance to you.

Hourly Rates - Mr. Pfeffer's rate is $290 per hour. Mr. Luciano's rate is $220 per hour. We understand this is a significant charge and do everything possible to keep your fees low, by minimizing unnecessary telephone calls, working as efficiently as possible under your circumstances, etc.
